81 Girls Race in Optimist Regatta

Eighty One girls ranging in age from 9 to 15 from 17 Long Island Sound sailing programs raced at Noroton Yacht Club in Optimist sailing dinghies on Monday, July 17. This event culminated a very successful two day racing clinic for girls only. Five races were sailed in light winds. All the boats started and raced together, but their finishes were divided into three fleets; the White Fleet for girls aged10 and under; the Blue Fleet for girls aged 11 and 12; and the Red Fleet for  girls ages 13 to 15. Overall and fleet winners were: 1rst, Oliva Crane from the Red Fleet and from host Noroton Y C ; 2nd Katie Kelly, Blue Fleet and Stamford YC; 3rd Laura Wefer, Blue Fleet and Sea Cliff YC; 4th Hope Wilson, Blue Fleet and American YC; 5th Emma Brinkman, Blue Fleet and American YC;  and 6th Catherine Shanahan, Red Fleet and Stamford YC. The winner of the youngest White Fleet was Julia Monro, Noroton YC. Who placed 9th in the fleet. The Sportsmanship award was given to Adele Whitmyer for aiding a capsized sailor.

In total, 26 Prizes were awarded to the girls by Noroton’s Commodore Ed Sweeney, assisted by Event Chairman Bob Monro. Bill Crane was the Principal Race Officer.
