AREA B SEARS RESULTS

On Wednesday, July 18, The Hudson River Yacht Racing Association and the Nyack Boat Club hosted the USSA Area B Sears Cup eliminations on the Tappan Zee, Hudson River. Five of the six Area B sailing associations were represented, with the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association team (Niantic Bay Y.C.) of Rob Fowler, Matt Byrnes-Jacobson, and Patrick James emerging with a narrow win over the JSA-LIS team (Pequot Y.C.) of Jamie McAvey, Cleve Rueckert and Alex Scolnik. Third place went to Jamie Beaty, Todd Wilson and Sarah Affel from the Central New York YRA (Northern Lake George Y.C.).

The first race was started in a light northeasterly, and went well until the wind died on the last leg of a two lap windward-leeward course; the time limit expired before any boat could finish. A postponement then ensued until the breeze filled in from the southeast at 5-12 knots, and racing resumed at 1445. By 1800, the Race Committee, chaired by USSA Senior Race Officer Fred Dexter, had managed to complete the required five race round robin series. When the last race ended, ECSA, an example of consistency, had earned themselves a trip to the Sears Finals at the Metedeconk Yacht Club on the Jersey shore in mid-August.
